Removing a Tablet from a Confucian Temple. The glory of Confucius in the Temple is shared by his disciples in life and a number of scholars of later days who have distinguished themselves by their efforts in upholding and spreading the Confucian teachings, to each one of whom a tablet is put up as a memorial. It has happened, indeed, many times in the course of ages that, perhaps at the whim of an Emperor, the tablet of some favourite has been wrongly honoured with a place among the elect. In such cases posterity has always been equal to the occasion, the canonization has been cancelled, and the tablet incontinently removed, as here shown. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920). Note: Image has been digitally enhanced to facilitate repro.
