A Sketch of the Operations before Charles town the Capital of South Caroline [bottom left with References describing conditions at capitulation 12th May 1780]. Inset: Charlestown Harbour; Size: 13 (33cm) x 75/16 (18.6 cm); Scale: 1'' = ca. 2/3 mile. Superimposed ms [manuscript] pasted over area between Ashley and Cooper Rivers. According to the Articles of Capitulation of Charlestown, 12 May 1780, Sir Henry Clinton was generous to the garrison and the prisoners of war; but in the subsequent treatment of the inhabitants, especially under Tarleton's butchery, the Articles were violated. The British historian Stedman, an officer under Clintonm says "The virtue of humanity was totally forgot". cf. Winsor, America, VI, p.322.
