This view shows some of the old houses in Silver Street, near the Quayside in Newcastle. During the Victorian period, people became increasingly interested in ancient buildings and bygone ways of life. The orange-red roofs and blue shadows of this scene show the popularity of bright colour in watercolour painting at this time. John Stephenson was a Newcastle artist and popular Geordie storyteller. His unusual middle name of Atlantic was the result of being born on a ship in the Atlantic Ocean.
