The Jumna Canal near Meerut with soldiers and fortifications, 1808. Oil on paper by Lieutenant Robert Smith (1787-1873), 1808. Officers and men of the Bengal Army, resting and conversing on a hot day by the Jumna Canal. The canal itself is not seen, but is indicated by the presence of ships’ sails behind the walls of a fortified battery. The artist, Lieutenant (later Colonel) Robert Smith, was an officer in the Bengal Engineers who was later responsible for supervising the repair of the Jama Musjid of Delhi, the largest and most famous mosque in India.
