Image description

U.S. adventurer Steve Fossett is assisted into a German DG 505 glider  by pressure suit technician Mike Todd near Omarama July 24, 2002.  Fossett and Perlan Project team leader Einar Enevoldson took the glider  for a familiarisation flight as they await optimum weather conditions  for an attempt to break the world glider altitude record. The Perlan  Project is an effort to take the glider past the existing record of  14,938 metres (48,996 feet), through severe turbulence and extreme  temperatures to 19,000 metres (63,000 feet).
