Not Dated A framed colour drawing on paper, showing: a half-length portrait in profile of General Alexander Hamilton (1755 or 57-1804), American statesman and one of the key Founding Fathers of the United States of America; he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the army, 1799, and was mortally wounded in a dual with Aaron Burr on July 11, 1804, and died the following day; in her diary for August 1804, Ellen Sharples, wife of the artist of this work, wrote, "Was much affected lately on hearing of the melancholy death of Gen Hamilton ... the sorrow manifested by the Americans for the loss of a man so sincerely and deservedly beloved"
