The ship breaking industry along the coastal areas at Sitakunda, Chittagong, started its operation in 1960 and flourished in a very short period of time due to lower labour costs and less stringent environmental regulations. Not only the wages of the workers are very low but the health and safety regulations for the workers are also very poor. The industry provides more than 80% of the countrys steel needs. Besides this around three million people are directly or indirectly involved and employed in the industry, and 40 percent of the work force comprises of child labourers. Despite the treacherous conditions, people from all over Bangladesh particularly poverty prong northern districts come to this industry to manage their livelihood. Chittagong, Bangladesh.
