Radio Equipment, Transmitters SWB1 short-wave radio transmitter no 7, 1927. Restored to approximately its original configuration, this Marconi short-wave radio transmitter was a product of the fast-growing electronics industry. Designed by one of the Italian radio pioneer Gugliemo Marconi's (1874-1937) own engineers, it was used to beam messages to the United States and South America from a transmitting station at Dorchester, Dorset. Marconi discovered a way waves could be used to send messages from one place to another without wires or cables, and made radio communication a practical proposition. ©SSPL/Science Museum
