Image description

Chart of the Heavens', c 1855. One of a set of teaching cards published by James Reynolds & Sons, London, England around 1850. Titled 'Chart of the Heavens', the celestial map was drawn and engraved by John Emslie. It shows the stars visible to the naked eye from the Northern hemisphere of the Earth throughout the year. The map is also marked with the Milky Way, a misty patch of light produced by countless faint stars in the plane of our galaxy. In addition the star chart is illustrated with various views through the telescope. These include star clusters and hazy objects called nebulae, which are now known to be galaxies and glowing clouds of gas in space. ©SSPL/Science Museum
