Charles Urban, American film pioneer, 1911. Chromolithograph of a caricature by Leslie Ward, better known as Spy, printed by Hentschel-Colourtype, London, from 'Vanity Fair' magazine. Signed by Charles Urban, September, 1911. Urban (1867-1942) was an American entrepreneur who took up G A Smith's Kinemacolor process and developed it into the first commercially successful colour motion picture process, in use from 1908 to 1916. Urban advocated sponsored filmmaking, forging deals with railway companies when making his travel films. His 'Warwick Trading Company' was the most prominent British film company at the turn of the twentieth century and the 'Charles Urban Trading Company', formed in 1903, reinforced his reputation as a supplier of quality documentary films. ©SSPL/NRM/Pictorial Collection
