Amulets, necklace and bottom part of a needle case, USA or Canada and Inuit. The turtle and the lizard amulets are made from hide and are associated with the Plains Indians, probably the Sioux. The turtle is decorated with beading and the lizard with quills. When a child was born a relative would make an amulet and a piece of the baby's umbilical cord would be kept inside this amulet. The turtle amulet was made for girls and the lizard for boys. The necklace consists of 18 teeth interspersed with red glass beads on a cloth band and is associated with the Chippewa Indians. The six objects on the leather strip are part of a needle case set associated with the Inuit of the Bering Strait. The set is made of leather, bone, ivory and stone and includes a thimble holder, amulets, tools and a thread holder. ©SSPL/Science Museum
