The Ever Victorious Army was the Chinese Imperial army between 1860-4. It was made up of mercenary Chinese soldiers but commanded, trained by British officers and financed by Shanghai merchants. The army was formed and initially commanded by Frederick Townsend Ward (1831-62). Upon his death the command was assumed by Captain Charles Gordon (1833-85). The army was used to suppress the Taiping rebellion.
