Warkworth (watercolour, bodycolour and pencil on paper)

Way, William Cosens drawing, watercolour, bodycolour and pencil on paper, entitled Warkworth, by the artist William Cosens Way The ruins of Warkworth Castle in Northumberland date from the 13th century onwards. The castle stands above the River Coquet, and was one of the homes of the family of the Duke of Northumberland. The style of this misty view and the long format of the composition are characteristic of William Cosens Way's watercolour paintings. He was Master of the Government School of Design at Newcastle for 32 years. He also taught in Sunderland, and was an extremely influential artist in the North East in the second half of the 19th century.
