SAINT CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA, 19th century (lithograph)

SAINT CYRIL of Alexandria (ca 370 - 27 June 444), theologian, Saint and Doctor of the Church, also known as Doctor Incarnationis. As the patriarch of Alexandria, he led a violent repression against paganism, Novazians, Jews (causing the Jewish colony of Alexandria to be destroyed) and against the imperial governor of Alexandria, Orestes. In 415, Hypatia, a neo-platonic philosopher, mathematician and pagan astronomer, was captured and brutally killed by her orders. Considered the most important Father of the Eastern Church after Saint Athanasius, the Catholic Church proclaimed him a saint and doctor of the Church on 28 July 1882.
