Unknown Artist, (19th century)
An example of non-regulation clothing worn in undress. This accordion fold cap, the ribs of which are wire covered with a black lacquered canvas, is of blue wool with a black leather brim. The cap would collapse and was secured by means of a resin or gutta percha button fastened in the centre of an extending cap band. There are two resin or gutta percha buttons on either side of the brim to secure the cap band and cap in a flat position. When the cap is unfolded, the cap band slides back to conceal these buttons. Under both buttons are long silk ribbons which would have secured the cap under the chin.
Interior: The underside of the brim is of natural brown leather, while the top has been lacquered black. There is an interior cap band of thin brown leather and a lining of glazed white linen.
