A framed colour drawing on paper, showing: a half-length portrait of Gouverneur Morris (1752-1816), American statesman and Founding Father of the United States of America; he was also a signatory to the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution, and is often called the "Penman of the Constitution"; in the background there is a suggestion of trees and a stone wall; from Ellen Sharples's diary, May 1810, while James and Ellen Sharples were staying with Gouverneur Morris at the family estate known as 'Morrisania', "Mr S[harples] finished the portraits of Mr. & Mrs Morris in which he had previously made some progress."
