Image description

Creator: Pedro Reinel A coloured manuscript drawn on vellum and backed with paper. Scale: circa 1:13,500,000, the chart has a latitude scale. This is a 'Portulan' or 'Portolan' chart, attributed to Pedro or Jorge Reinel on stylistic grounds. Prominence is given to the fort which the Portuguese had built at Elmina, (the mine), on the Guinea coast in 1482. It helped to maintain Portuguese control of the export of gold, ivory and slaves for a further century after this chart was drawn.
