Creator: Abraham Ortelius
An atlas sheet from an edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum with Latin text, published in 1573, a hand coloured copperplate engraving. This map of Europe extends from Greenland to North Africa and has borders graduated for latitude and longitude. There is a compass, which is not aligned with the projection, at top right and a distance scale of little utility as the scale of the map varies from north to south, at bottom left. The title is on a plinth which is surmounted by Europa and the bull of classical mythology. The land in Tartary is decorated with tents and the Atlantic is decorated with a ship.
