SunPipe' lighting system, Wroughton, June 2003. The SunPipe is a special duct which channels sunlight from a clear dome in the roof to dim areas of a building where windows cannot reach. The mirrored aluminium surface inside the tubes reflects and transmits the light like a giant optical fibre. The SunPipe system is effective in both sunny and overcast conditions and even when its raining. The Australian inventor Greg Miller patented the modern version of SunPipes in 1988, but they were first used approximately 4,000 years ago when the Egyptians used light shafts and mirrors to bring daylight down into the centre of the Pyramids. ©SSPL/Science Museum
