Sketch Showing the Attack on Tel-el-Kebir, 13th September 1882'. A printed and hand-drawn map of the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir, Egypt, drawn from memory in 1882 by one of the British officers involved. The map shows the postitions of the British and Egyptian forces during the battle. It is signed by a Major H Ardagh and a Lieutenant A B Crabbe. The Egyptian army occupied a strategic postion between Alexandria, the Suez Canal and Cairo. The British army under the command of Major General Sir Garnet Wolseley (1833-1913) launched a successful dawn attack on the postion on 13 September 1882, effectively ending the war. The map is from an album entitled 'Algiers Egypt &c 1882-1883' which belonged to Brigadier General Herbert Conyers Surtees (1858-1933), antiquarian and MP for Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
