Sir Edmund Godfrey taking the testimony of Titus Oates . From a playing card of 1679. In 1678, Oates accused the Roman Catholic Church of approving an assassination of Charles II. This was known as the Polish Plot. Godfrey, then governor of Bridewell Hospital, was witness to Oates' desposition, and was found death two weeks later in Primrose Hilll, London.
