Princess Astrid and Martha, Sweden, 1920s (b/w photo)

Princess Astrid. 1905-1935. Swedish princess. Married in 1926 to Crown Prince Leopold of Belgium. Then Crown Princess of Belgium later Queen of Belgium between 1934 and 1935. During a joint car excursion on August 29, 1935, their car ran off the road and Astrid was thrown from the car and died. Here Princess Astrid with her sister Märtha. Märtha later became queen of Norway, married to King Olav V. The two sisters attend a household school here run by Jenny Akerstrom. Jenny wrote the classic cookbook The Princesses' Cookbook, which she dedicated to the princesses Astrid and Märtha, hence the name. In the book there was a green cake that the princesses are said to have been particularly fond of. This later came to be called Princess Cake. Sweden 1920s
