Image description

This sculpture in Hawke's Bay or East Coast style, may have been a gable ornament or interior house post. Carved heads were also used to decorate war canoes, attached to the underside of the bow. The hollow on the reverse may have been used to hold life force pieces such as dog hair or greenstone adze blades, symbols of chieftainship.
