The abbey, Preuilly-sur-Claise, 2022 (photography)

Preuilly-sur-Claise is a commune in the Indre-et-Loire department in central France. The village of Preuilly, located in the extreme south of Touraine, on the borders of Bas-Berry (Indre) and Poitou (Vienne), is a village of Adret that dominates the Claise valley. The Saint-Pierre Abbey is a major building of Romanesque art, both for its originality in the development of its architecture and for its quality of richness in terms of sculpture. Classified as a historical monument, dated to the 12th century, it was redesigned over time in the 15th century and then deeply restored in the 19th century. The bell tower, rebuilt following its collapse, has been equipped with a spire covered with glazed tiles in a style reminiscent of the roofs of the Beaune hospices, unusual for the region. The sculptures in the capitals are due to Denis's scissors and his studio.
