The "Carolina" Affair. In 1837, when part of Canada was in a state of rebellion, the American steamer Carolina (or as some historians give it, Caroline) was engaged in gun-running operations. As the local authorities were unable or unwilling to stop her, Colonel MacNab sent a small party led by Commander A Drew, RN to destroy the vessel. He managed to take her in a particularly dashing action, cutting her away from her moorings under the guns of Fort Schlosser. After removing her people, he set her on fire and let her drift over Niagara Falls, a huge blazing torch, the awe-inspiring sight of which had a great moral effect on the rebels and their sympathisers.
