The Locomotive. Trevithick's Locomotive. On Xmas Eve, 1801, a road locomotive constructed by Richard Trevithick, a Cornish engineer, carried the first load of passengers ever conveyed by steam. In 1804 Trevithick constructed a steam locomotive which successfully hauled five wagons and a load of 13 tons at about 5 mph on a tramway at the Pen-y-darran Iron Works, Wales. Electric Locomotive. The great electric locomotive is a product of the present century. Our picture shows one of the most powerful in the world, built for the Pennsylvania Railway through the Alleghany Mountains, with four Westinghouse motors developing a total of 4,800 horse-power. Illustration for one of a set of cigarette cards on the subject of Past & Present issued by Wills in 1929.
