At the beginning of the 19th century English Hoys (small sloop-rigged coastal boats) were plying the passenger trade between London and the north Kent coast, allowing middle class Londoners the opportunity of escaping London for the clearer air of, for example, Margate. This scene was described in a song by Charles Dibdin (c.1745-1814).
