The Battle of Cynoscephalae, Bc.197. In 197 BC the army of Philip V of Macedon was thoroughly defeated by the Romans under Flaminius. This decisive battle was fought in Thessaly, near a range of low hills, which were called Cynoscephalae, or dogs' heads, from their peculiar shape. This reverse, and the threatened invasion of Macedon by a large army of Romans and their allies, caused Philip to sue for peace, and to acknowledge the independence of the Greek states.
