The women shown in this scene are manufacturing weapons at the Royal Ordnance Factory, Birtley, County Durham during the Second World War (1939-1945). Women were encouraged to work in factories to replace the men who had joined the armed forces. Francis Dodd's picture is part of the War Artists' scheme to record the war effort.
