Captain Samuel Argall (died 1626) took Pocahontas (or Matoaca, 1595-1617) aboard his ship. Representation of the events of the years 1613 and 1614, in Virginia (United States), in the foreground, Pocahontas is described being deceived by the British captain, who will hold her hostage on board, and in the background, a description of the events of March 1614, when the English offered to exchange Pocahontas for English prisoners and arms and property held by the Indian leader, and description of English ships on the York River attacking an Indian village. Engraving by Johannus Theodorus de Bry (1561-1623).
