Revolt of the People of Appenzell and St Gall. In the seventeenth century an Irish priest gave his name to what is now the town and canton of St Gall. In the course of six centuries a famous Benedictine monastery was established, and by the fourteenth century the abbot had become a prince of the Empire and ruler over the district. The people of Appenzell and St Gall frequently revolted against the abbots, and after a long and bitter conflict won their independence. In the middle of the fifteenth century the town of St Gall joined the Swiss Confederation. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920).
