Commemorative plaque on the floor of the Union Square in honor of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (Colmar, August 2, 1834 - Paris, October 4, 1904), also known by the nickname of Amilcar Hasenfratz, who was an Alsatian sculptor particularly known for being the author of the famous Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States, which is located at the entrance of the port of New York, as well as the monumental Lion of Belfort, carved into a cliff to celebrate the heroic resistance of the city during the siege of 1870-71 during the Franco-Prussian War. Burnham's initial design was similar to the building rose, but much more elaborate in the top and fitted with the facades of many steps near the pinnacle. The face of a clock, which likewise was eliminated from the final design is also distinguished.
