The Short Mayo Composite aircraft consists of a Short Empire flying boat (G-ADHK "Maia") which carries a smaller Short Mercury seaplane (G-ADHJ). The "Mercury" was carried by the "Maia" up to cruising altitude, then the planes parted company and the "Maia" returned to the airport of departure. Thus the "Mercury" could cover longer distances.
