Steam locomotive on the Maryport and Carlisle Railway in Cumbria, 1855. 'Travel in 1855'. Oil painting by Cuthbert Hamilton Ellis, made in 1951, for a British Railways, London Midlands Region (BR/LMR) carriage print. The railway, which was engineered by George Stephenson (1781-1848), was built between 1837 and 1845 with the twin objective of extending the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway and providing railway access to the northern part of the West Cumberland coalfield. The locomotive is depicted pulling a passenger train. This was one of a series of paintings commissioned for carriage prints by George Dow, advertising manager of BR/LMR during the 1950s. ©SSPL/NRM/Pictorial Collection
