Image description

James Halsell, (L) a former astronaut and Launch Integration Space Shutttle Program Manager, describes at a press conference the mechanical questions which forced a delay in the launch of the space shuttle Discovery, October 5, 2000. Mission STS-92 is the 100th space shuttle mission, and flight was delayed because of the possibliity that an abnormal explosive bolt might malfunction and affect separation of the large external fuel tank from the orbiter. Launch directors will try to launch again after a 24-hour scrub. Discovery is scheduled to carry 7 astronauts on a mission to the International Space Station. At right is Bill Gurstenmaier, Manager of Space Shuttle Integration. JLS/RCS
