Miles's patent agitable lamps, Birmingham, 1787- c 1791. Etching with engraved copperplate text and border illustrations. Trade advertisement for lamps that burn oil which is cheaper than candles and give equal light. The text is bordered by engravings illustrating 16 different kinds of oil lamps and lantern lights for houses and coach transport. The top of the sheet is headed by a night coaching scene with lights streaming from a coach lantern and house doorway. Relating to John Miles, patent 1591 of 12 February 1787, possibly the cover from his catalogue of wares issued c 1791-1794. ©SSPL/Science Museum
