John Hunter, British physiologist and surgeon, 1788. 19th century copy of a life mask of John Hunter aged 60. The original mask was made by Sir Joshua Reynolds. The plaster copy is seen here in wooden display case. John Hunter (1728-1793), FRS, was an eminent Scottish physiologist and surgeon who investigated many subjects, from venereal disease and embryology to blood, inflammation and gunshot wounds. He has been called the 'founder of scientific surgery' and his writings revolutionised dentistry. Hunter was appointed surgeon-extraordinary to George III in 1776, and became surgeon-general to the army in 1790. The Hunterian Society was founded in London in 1819 to honour his life and works. ©SSPL/Science Museum
