Image description

Inuits, Canada, 1819-1822. Engraving after a drawing by George Back (1796-1878), of Junius and Augustus, 'Eskimaux interpreters'. Illustration from John Franklin's (1786-1847) 'Narrative of a journey to the shores of the Polar Sea, in the years 1819, 20, 21, and 22', published in London in 1823. Back was one of the members of the expedition. Franklin died in 1845 during another expedition, as did his entire team who perished of starvation and scurvy, although Franklin was posthumously credited with the discovery of the Northwest Passage. ©SSPL/Science Museum
