Great Exhibition 1851 'The Crystal Palace', 1851. Chromolithograph with a gilt trim illustrating the Great Exhibition and the countries it represented. The central oval shows the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park where the exhibition was housed. In front of the building the royal coach can be seen moving through crowds to the Great Exhibition building. Around the central space are scenes depicting life in Egypt, Asia and the African continent. The top left image is of people visiting the 'Great Exhibition of the Works of the Industry of all Nations' itself, the conception of Prince Albert (1819-1861). It was designed by the landscape designer Joseph Paxton (1801-1865), and was the first large-scale prefabricated ferrovitreous (iron and glass) structure. The prefabricated design made the construction, and later dismantling, easier and quicker. ©SSPL/Science Museum
