Cinema pioneers at a Paris convention, 1909. This group includes Robert William Paul, Cecil Hepworth, George Melies, James A Williamson, G H Cricks, J H Martin and W G Barker. Paul (1869-1943) made one of the first news films Hepworth (1874-1953) invented a type of arc lamp, wrote the first book on the cinema and established his own film company Melies (1861-1938) made the famous 'A Trip to the Moon' (1902), with early special effects Williamson (1855-1933) started out making short films and moved into the manufacture of film equipment G H Cricks' 'A Visit To Peek Frean And Co's Biscuit Works' (1906) was one of the first films to use indoor arc lighting Martin directed 'The Freak Barber'(1905) featuring a barber who cuts his customer's heads off William George Barker (1868¿1951) made 'Henry VIII' (1911).
