Arthur Charles Clarke (b 1917) was to become a leading science fiction writer, following a period of work in scientific research. When he was almost ten years old, his mother took him flying at Taunton, Devon, in an British Avro 504 biplane owned by the Cornwall Aviation Company. His mother, Mrs Mary Nora Clarke, is sitting at the rear. The pilot is Captain Percival Phillips. For Arthur, this was to be the first of innumerable worldwide flights.
