George I twelve-light chandelier, c.1719 (gilt-gesso)

The central column surmounted by a ducal coronet above a corinthian capital and four scrolled branches each with a brass drip-pan and nozzle, above a baluster section with four scrolls, above egg-and-dart issuing eight scrolled branches carved with acanthus husks and foliage over a hatched ground, with griffin terminals surmounted by brass drip-pans and nozzles, the sphere with gadrooned upper part above four cartouches enclosing ovals with pounced ground, the cartouches over a hatched ground, with four-leaf acanthus finial and replaced metal lower finial for central thread, the gesso largely original but with 19th century water-gilding, one large branch replaced in the 19th century, stamped 'K.E.BOWERS & SON 1969' on the top of the sphere.
