Peruvian children read graffiti written by Shining Path guerillas after an attack in the Peruvian Andean jungle town of Matucana Baja, July 19, 2003. The graffiti reads: "Hurrah the popular war". When a column of Shining Path guerrillas marched into this tiny hamlet deep in the Peruvian jungle a fortnight ago, Tito Salazar's mind raced with images of neighbours hacked to death by rebels 20 years ago. Able to muster just five unless, rust-caked rifles between them, the poor coffee farmer and his tiny community looked helplessly on as the 70-strong, well - armed group of rebels vowed they meant them no harm.
