Boatswain's mate Christopher Ruiz, a native of Blue Island, IL uses binoculars as he stands watch on the fantail as a S-3B Viking approaches for its landing on the the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) aircraft carrier in the Gulf, March 16, 2003. The S-3B Viking is a carrier-based jet used for surface search, tanking, and anti-surface warfare and is equipped for long range radar, visual, and electronic search, surveillance, and attack around the aircraft carrier battle group. The USS Abraham Lincoln, now on its 239th day of deployment, is one of three, eight-ship battle groups operating in the Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch patrolling the southern 'no-fly' zone over Iraq.
