Why "Piccadilly"? To find the reason for this name it is necessary to go back to the age of elegance, when spruce coxcombs puffed out their fine clothes with rags and bran, and had looking glasses set in their tobacco boxes. Both women and men wore the piccadil, or pickadell, and these fineries - described as mists of white linen - brought a fortune to a tailor, Mr Higgins. The establishment he caused to be built on the north-west corner of the Haymarket, London, was called Piccadilly Hall, and the street known all over the civilized world derives its name from this house. Illustration for one of a set of 50 "Do You Know?" cigarette cards issued by Carreras in 1939.
