Job Charnock founding Calcutta, 1690. In 1686 the noted factor, Job Charnock, fixed upon the site of Calcutta (Satanati) and built a wattle and daub factory on the banks of the Hugli, from which he had to flee on account of troubles between the British and native authorities. He went to Madras until these were over. In 1690 he returned to Bengal, and with an armed party proceeded to Satanati and scrambled up the mud bank in the rains, to find only the remains of a burnt hut, out of which eventually grew the great capital of Calcutta.
