Vest, Army Staff, worn by General Sir William Henry Clinton, 1812 circa. This vest is made of white linen. The seven gilt metal buttons down the front bear the insignia of a general officer and are decorated with a crossed sword and baton in a wreath. Clinton, the son of General Sir Henry Clinton of the American War of Independence fame, was promoted to major-general in 1808. In 1812 he was sent to Sicily to command the division at Messina.
