Thomas Allom was a London w/c painter. He was one of only a few 18th century artists to travel as far as China, where he painted this scene. The picture is in brown wash as it was intended to be reproduced as a print. It was published in 1843 as one of several prints titled 'China in a Series of Views, Displaying the Scenery, Architecture and Social Habits of that Ancient Empire'. The detail in the picture is all the more striking because of its tiny size;
