Printed caption which reads, "Showing the common style of placing the stones in the lower part of a building requiring strength: the stones are pyramids, the apex of each being inwards; no mortar is used in order to allow some play during an earthquake." Perhaps the caption misses the point of the photograph, it is a compelling very early view (the first that I know of) of a street scene in Japan with a crowd looking at the photographer.
