Martinus RØRBYE
(1803-1848)
View from Girgenti
1840
Oil on canvas Sor0, Sor0 Kunstmuseum
Rørbye painted this View from Girgenti in a single morning. He and his wife, Rose, were staying in Palermo when the artist set out on his own to the southern coast of Sicily, to study the ancient Greek ruins there. With his very distant point of view, it is not easy to distinguish the pillars of the temple of Hera on the heights. Rørbye focuses, rather, on the arid and rocky landscape, dotted with olive trees scattered about.
